This is the 1978 Monogram reissue of the Aurora Superman kit.    The Monogram reissue was the last of the reissues to include the original head... afterwards the tooling was changed and a new head was made part of the kit replacing the original one.   The new head is pretty horrible looking in my opinion, its very round and bloated looking, so I was determined to track down this version which I found on Ebay and paid $20 for.

I had the original Aurora as a child of the 60'sbut like all the rest of my Aurora kits, it met it's fate with a firecracker or two...  What was I thinking back then??? Sheesh...

Building and painting the reissue was pretty enjoyable, but not without a couple of problems along the way...  First problem was getting the cape to stay in place, I must have glued that thing on 10 times over, as it kept falling off.  Finally I read somewhere that you could correct the problem by placing a small wedge formed from 2 part epoxy putty under the cape where it rests against the back of the figure, center of the neck.  That did the trick...

Another issue was the decal...  the decal that came with the kit started to dissolve as soon as I placed it in a decal setting solution (Micro-sol).  The decal was old and brittle, so I thought submerging it in an the Micro-sol would correct that, it was supposed to... but, as fate would have it, the modeling Gods mocked me that day and my decal was ruined.   My solution was to find an image on the Web of the chest insignia, print it on my color ink jet printer, glue it to the chest area with Elmer's white glue then cover it with a couple of hand brushed coats of "Delta Clear Acrylic Matte Varnish"... Worked like a charm!

After it was dry, I carefully painted over the color provided by the ink from the printer and then sealed it with another two coats of the matte varnish....  Once the model was completely painted I sealed the entire thing with Testers Dull Cote.  To me, this turned out looking better than it would have with the decal.  The insignia looks more like material then the plastic decal would have, so I'm happy with the results.  I repeated the same process for replacing the decal on the cape as well...

Everything was painted using Delta Ceramcoat Acrylic craft paints...  I love this stuff!
